Celebration and Criticism

I am a the editor of Redactions: Poetry & Poetics. It’s a print, poetry journal that celebrates poetry. I write book reviews for the journal, too, and you can find them here. Each review celebrates what I think is a good book, and I have received criticism for that. I’ve been criticized for not criticizing negatively. But as I said, Redactions is a celebration. I publish the best poetry I can find, and I write about the best books I have read. Why waste time and pages and the money to print those pages on negative criticism?

Here, however, here I will talk about everything, as I see it. Still, I won’t do negative criticism. Instead, I will do explorations. I will point out what a poem is doing or not doing and how that doing or not doing is successful or unsuccessful, because, after all, a poem is what it does, and if it’s not doing, then it’s not a poem.

And as William Stafford says, “a poem becomes a poem by looking at it in a certain way.”

So tilt your heads with me, and let’s see what poetry we can see.

Next up a review of a review about underperforming haiku.//
