Einstein’s Haiku

When I teach poetry to my students, I teach them wholeheartedly what Pound said, “Go in fear of abstractions.” I teach them that the image is always better, especially in the matters in of love. But sometimes it’s not. The below example illustrates this perfectly.

   Walter Matthau as EinsteinEinstein's Haiku
     (For Melissa)

   Everything I do
Means I want to love you squared –
   Come with me and prove

Isn’t that fun. It says I love you. It rhymes in two lines and the title. It’s an acrostic for E=mc2. It even has an allusion to Christopher Marlowe’s “The Passionate Shepard to His Love.” There’s so much going on. And it really does say I love you. It’s complicated in a playful way – just like love.

I wrote this after watching I.Q.//

This poem has energy, and illustrates a formula for the expression of the variables of love. It has mass and gravity, yet one can feel the power of light and unseen forces all through it. Masterfully done, Tom! (And i’m sure Melissa loves it, too!) ; )
